Tyrannosaurus Rex

Tyrannosaurus Rex 1The Tyrannosaurus Rex also commonly known as T. rex (pronunciation: tie-RAN-oh-SAW-rus Rex) meaning a “Tyrant King Lizard” lived 67-65 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period.  They were one of the largest theropod dinosaurs that lived, with adults weighting up to 5 -7 tons, growing up to 14 meters long and up to 5 meters tall.

Tyrannosaurus Rex 2The t. rex was a bulky fierce predator that walked on two powerful legs.  It had a big head equipped with a powerful jaw, sharp teeth, and a stiff tail that provides balance and allowed quick turns while running.  Tyrannosaurus had tiny arms, each with two fingers, but a pair of bird-like food with three large toes, all outfitted with claws (plus a little dewclaw on a tiny, vestigial fourth toe).  The t. rex’s neck was muscular and short.  Its body was solidly built but it bones were hollow. From its partial fossil remains found t. rex had probably about 200 bones, roughly the same as a human, but the exact number is know as there had been no complete skeleton found.

Although the tyrannosaurus was not the biggest meat-eating dinosaur discovered, it was one of the largest terrestrial carnivores of all time.  Its’ primary weapon was its mouth, which had a 1.2 meter long jaw and a 1 meter gape.  They had 50-60 thick, pointed curved saw-like teeth that could crunch bones.  The size ranges from very small to over 23 cm (9 inches) long.  Adult tyrannosaurus had a variety of teeth sizes at one time; as teeth were broken, new smaller one with grow in to replace them.

Tyrannosaurus Rex 3The t. rex was able to puncture it prey’s organ in one hit, before tearing off its flesh.  They were unable to chew, so had to swallow its prey whole. It could eat up to 230 kilograms of meat and bones in one bite.  This was proven in one fossil find where a large carnivore had died swallowing, with long bones stuck from in its gullet.
