Stegosaurus

Dinosaur stegosaurus (Pronoun: STEG-oh-SAW-rus), it means a cover lizard.  They lived in the Jurassic period 150 to 145 million years ago.  Even though stegosaurus is a herbivore, eating mainly low level ferns, they are relatively large. Mature dinosaurs can grow up to 12 meters long and weight up to 7 tons.

Fossil remains found saw a wide distribution of Stegosaurs from the United States (Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming), Western Europe, China and Southern Africa.

From the skeleton remains stegosaurus had four sturdy legs and a line of plates running down its back.  They had noticeably longer and straighter back legs and a powerful beaked like mouth for cropping up vegetation.

Stegosaurus 2Stegosaurus has a short and muscly tail with four 1 meter long spikes which is used as a formidable tail.  To protect the throat area there are a series of bones under the neck that acts as a chain mail.

The actual role of the plated armour is unknown.  It could be used as armour to protect, act a form of heat control or just for display.  Many palaeontologists believed that is were only used for display by putting off attackers and for attracting a mate.
