Quetzalcoatlus

QuetzalcoatlusThe quetzacoatlus (pronounced: KWET-zal-koh-AT-lus) was named afte the Aztec feathered god “Quetzalcoatl”.  They existed between 67-65 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period.

This flying reptile was one of the largest flying animals ever to exist with a wing-span of around 12 meters.  Despite its hug size, the skeleton was lightly built with hollow bones and mature adults weighing up of 100-135 kilograms.  They had a extremely long slender neck and a long thin beak with a toothless jaws.  It head was topped with a long bony crest.

Quetzalcoatlus 2Questions has been raised on about how quetzacoatlus lived as fossilized remains discovered have not been found in marine strata but in sandy and silt of a large river’s flood plains in Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA.  It was know that they were good soarers can was certainly capable of covering large distances.  Because of its long neck some paleontologists believed that they were vulture and fed on the corpses of dead dinosaurs, while other believed that because they had a long slender jaw suggest that it probed soft ground and pools for mollusks and crustaceans.  They would have flown low over warm shallow seas plucking for fish from the surface.
