Koolasuchus

KoolasuchusThe Koolasuchus (pronounced as KOOL-uh-SOOK-us) existed between the 112-104 million years ago during the early Creatacous period.  The first fossilized remain found in 1989 were two large jaws excavated from Lower Creataceous rocks near San Remo, Victoria, Australia.   It was then realized that the Koolasuchus belong to a large amphibian family known as “temnospondyls”, specie that was taken over by the crocodiles.

Koolasuchus 2It was believed that they were capable of crawling on land, but would have lived in water most of time.  With a length of up to 5 meters long, 30 centimeters in height and with adults weighting up to half a ton it was a very powerful amphibian at that time.  They were carnivores capable of eating crustaceans (clams, crayfish, crabs and etc.), fish, turtles, and even small dinosaurs like young Leaellynasaura. With its wide, long powerful and teeth with maze-like infoldings jaw it could just open and snap up its prey.  It was also possible for it to detect the vibrations of its prey in the water.
