Jurassic Period

Jurassic PeriodThe Jurassic period began 208 million years ago and ended around 149 million years ago.  It was the time when the Earth was beginning to drift apart.  The minor extinction at the end of the Triassic period gave heights to a large quantity of dinosaurs in the Jurassic period.  During which the climate was strongly seasonal and at most time dry and hot.

Although the climate was so harsh, the plant lines extended from the Triassic period.  Various plants such as tufted, palm-like cycads, seed ferns, gingkos, and conifers formed in the subtropical forest.  Towards the late Jurassic period, the flowering plants, angiosperms developed, and would soon change the face of the Earth.

Jurassic Period 2Also in this period the developing and diversifying of mammals began.  Some of these mammals include Docodonts, Morganucodontids, symmetrodonts, multiberclates and a recently found mouse-sized Middle Jurassic mammal known as “tribosphenidan from Madagascar.  There were also pterosaurs, a flying reptile which was known to be the largest flying vertebrates known.

In the seas of the Jurassic period were many abundant coral reefs, fish, fishlike reptiles known as ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, giant marine crocodiles, ammonites, squids, shards and the first ever know rays.

As the end of the period around 190-193 million years ago, a minor mass extinction erupted. In which greater then 80% of marine bivalve species such as clams, and many other shallow water species and marine reptiles died out.  This also affected dinosaurs’ species such as stegosaurid, and enormous sauropod dinosaurs’, and genera of ammonoids. The exact caused the minor extinction was not known.  Some believed that it was set off by the release of large amount of methane deposits with the Earth.  These deposits are created underneath the seabed as surface algae dies and sinks to the sea floor.
