Ankylosaurus

AnkylosaurusThe Ankylosaurus (pronounced: ang-KIE-lo-SAWR-us), was a large dinosaur, measuring about up to 10 meters in length, 2 meters wide and 1.5 meters tall.  Its weigh can range from 3-4 tons.  They were four legged dinosaur with five toed feet and a relatively short neck.

Ankylosaurus are an armored dinosaur with heavy protection of thick oval plates implanted in its leathery skin.  It had two rows of spikes along its body.  Its head had large tough horns in each corner that is projected from the back of the head.  Its skull was nearly 1 meter long and broad, but very thick leaving little space for a brain. It even had bony plates to protect it eyes.  It was believed that the only place that was un-plated was the under-belly.  By flipping it over was the only way to wound it.

Ankylosaurus 2Its secret weapon is its’ club-like tail, which is made up of large clumps of bony tissue fixed to the tail’s vertebrae and covered by tough reptilian skin.  This muscular tail was flexible and was able to swing powerfully from side to side.

This herbivore dinosaur lived between 67-65 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period.  Its first fossil found was in 1908 in Western USA, Montana and Canada, Alberta, where two Ankylosaurus skulls and three partial skeletons including armor and a tail club have been found.
